Last Thursday, President Barack Obama made a trip to 1776 to speak with the DC technology start-ups and entrepreneurs. TransitScreen Cofounder and President Matt Caywood got the opportunity to demo TransitScreen to the President of the United States.
“Sustainability, I get it. I think it’s a wonderful idea,” President Obama said to Matt after seeing a brief display of how TransitScreen works to provide public transit riders with the information they need to make more sustainable choices.
The President’s visit to 1776 was a surprise to all involved; in fact, the 1776 members weren’t notified the POTUS would be visiting the campus until an hour prior to his arrival. “We actually had no warning whatsoever [that the president was showing up today],” Matt told Washington Business Journal’s Bill Flook, for his article “Pitching POTUS: What it’s like to demo your tech product for President Obama.” With no warning, and no time to prepare, “it was certainly the most intense pitch I’ve had to do,” he said.
The opportunity to speak with the President of the United States doesn’t come about very often. But given the opportunity on Thursday, Matt made the most of it.
“I was initially apprehensive that President Obama, who is required to travel by motorcade, wouldn’t understand how important it is to compare multiple modes of transportation. However, he immediately understood the usefulness of TransitScreen, as well as its mission to make it easier for people to make sustainable transportation choices. Even the White House can benefit from real-time transit information, and we hope the President will be able to use TransitScreen to choose between walking, bus and BikeShare One on his next coffee run.” – Matt Caywood, cofounder and president of TransitScreen
