The Power of Multimodal Transit

The Power of multimodal transit information is in its ability to enable travelers to make better choices about their transportation. People are always in a hurry to get to where they are going: whether they are going to work, to their home, to church, to their family or friends, or to spin class, they need to be where they are going on time. TransitScreen displays are able to provide travelers with a quick and easy understanding of all transportation options from their current location on one screen, enabling them to quickly and effectively select the best transit option for themselves at that time. The TransitScreen service is a live, real-time display of all transportation options at a specific location (including subway, bus, train, bike share, and car share). TransitScreen is a Transportation Demand Management (TDM) solution to create sustainable, walkable, bike-able cities of the future and inform citizens, promote behavior change, and reduce parking and traffic on city streets.

In 2009, CHK America, Inc. conducted a 2-year study with major transportation agencies in some of the largest cities in the US, including DC, Los Angeles and Chicago, and researched the psychology behind their wayfinding strategies, and the successes of those strategies. “What we learned is that we’ve got 8 seconds to provide useful answers to a customer’s questions before they become frustrated and walk away,” stated Rick Wood, President and CEO of CHK America, Inc. 8 seconds to display all the transit information and traveler may need to utilize public transit most effectively. TransitScreen was designed with that detail at the forefront of the designer’s mind. Every 20-30 seconds, each individual TransitScreen receives the current arrival times for each transit agency at all stops within walking distance of its location. This real-time, reliable information is available through open data sharing from Washington, DC, San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Portland, Toronto and Vancouver transit agencies. TransitScreen is displayed on a standard monitor, needing only access to Wi-Fi internet and a power outlet.

Today, urban areas around the world provide their citizens with multiple transit options. But with many of these options run by separate transit agencies, it’s difficult for a traveler to navigate through the multiple schedules or the apps simultaneously to find the best option. TransitScreen displays are built to solve this issue directly. No scrolling, no changing screens, no flipping pages back and forth. One static screen has all the transit information a traveler needs for trains, buses, bike share and more. In a fast paced world, TransitScreen puts the traveler on the best transit path quickly and effectively.
